Making use of our fluorescent pulsed light (FPL) technology, the Omnilight™ and Novalight™ FPL™ Pulsed Light Systems eliminate the appearance of hair using a method known as selective photothermolysis. This involves disabling the hair re-growth mechanism by raising the temperature of the hair follicle high enough to irreversibly damage the follicle’s germinative cells without damaging the epidermis or surrounding tissue.

The Growth Stages of Human Hair
|
1) Active growth phase (called the anagen phase), which lasts up to
several years. At any given time, the majority (85%) of our body hair is in this phase. During
anagen, the hair has an abundance of melanin and a follicle is present. |
|
2) Regressive phase (catagen phase), which lasts about two weeks, during which
the hair stops growing but is not yet shed. About 3 – 4 % of our body hair is in this phase at
any given time. The blood supply to the follicle is no longer present. |
|
3) Resting phase (telogen phase), which lasts 5 - 6 weeks, at the end of which
the hair falls out and a new hair begins to form. Approximately 10 – 13 % of our body hair is
in this phase at any given time. There is no follicle present. |

How It Works
The secret is to ensure that the melanin is not overheated, which causes it to lose its ability to absorb light. If this occurs, follicle heating – the crux of permanent hair reduction – may not be successful. This results in a temporary outcome, with hair re-growth occurring up to six months following treatment. The effectiveness of FPL often depends on the fluence used during treatment.

Patient Consultation
During an initial patient consultation you should discuss with your patient how the machine works, the costs involved with each desired treatment session, and the number of sessions needed. All aspects of the treatment should be discussed with your patient, including all risks and benefits. After listening to the patient's expectations, you should formulate a treatment regimen that both you and the patient are comfortable with.

Treatments
To achieve complete or nearly complete removal of unwanted hair in patients with ideal skin and hair color, repeated sessions (3-6 treatments) in 2-3 month intervals are needed. Clinical studies have shown that most patients are satisfied after 3-7 treatments, though some cases may require more than eight treatments.
(Note: We do not recommend treatment on children below the age of 16 years as their hair follicles and endocrine system have not yet fully developed.)

FPL Benefits
The benefits of using the Omnilight™ or Novalight™ FPL™ Pulsed Light Systems compared to
alternative IPL systems include their increased effectiveness due to adjustable pulse width, and our
advanced pulse forming and BTS™ (Better Than Sapphire)
speed epidermal pre-cooling technologies – all designed to increase patient comfort
and minimize side effects. The combination of advanced pulse forming and BTS
speed epidermal pre-cooling gives our FPL systems the ability to easily treat all skin types.
